What I want to share in this article is that what happened in the hostel where I am currently living in, or more specifically, the unit. Each unit has 4 twin rooms, 2 bathrooms, a kitchen, and a balcony. My unit was not full at the time when I was just a uni-newbie.

Okay, here’s come the interesting part.

Starting from the first week, I kept hearing a sound of like someone dropped a marble on a table or on the floor almost every night, as clear as I could know that sound came from the room next to mine, but I don’t really care of the sound as I thought that might be my housemate was doing so. Few weeks later, I finished all my exams and people were going home to enjoy the holiday. I stayed in the hostel for days as I got something else to do. And I kinda released my inner me when staying in hostel because I realized that no one else except me still in the unit, even though I was actually not sure about that. My assumption of I was alone came from the fact of I saw no one ever walked out from the rooms, I heard no sound from others. Well, I never walked out of the unit for those few days and there is no soundproof, that’s why I knew.

And……yes, I still heard the sound.

Nice. I told myself. Looks like I got a date with a……NONONONO.

Honestly, I was a bit scared. But I calmed myself that this was none of my business as the sound was from another room, even ghosts did exist, it was not haunting me but my housemate who was going to come back from her vacation. I was fine.

I texted my friends and joked about this happening. Then I found out something interesting.

Water hammer occurs when water flow is shut off suddenly like when the toilet is flushed. This change in pressure rattles the piping and create ‘clanging’sounds, which may sound like marbles dropping after distortion through concrete walls.
